Abraham Noble had not reached that point when he lay down for his Sunday nap. His nap slipped thirty minutes past its usual hour and he does not stir. Five minutes ago, the rhythm of his breathing changed from normal to small gasps, and the span of his life's final seconds began counting down.
His senses are no longer aware of the late summer breeze coming through the open bedroom window, or the thin rustling sound of the starched, white curtains that reminded him of distant rain when he lay down after dinner. A reclusive man dying from natural causes at the age of eighty-nine-years-old allowed the people of Grit Hill to pay their final respects, despite the fact that he had gone out of his way to keep them from asking personal questions about his past or become his friends.
Milo Pierson was not from Grit Hill, but he was asked to preach Abraham's funeral. He carried out his duties and gave a sigh of relief when it was over. But it wasn't over. A serpent's truth revealed itself when the casket was being loaded into the hearse, momentarily confusing the country preacher with its unusual deception. Its guile set in motion a string of events that no one expected. The old man's terrible past reached across time and was used as a deadly tool by the fruit of the deception. Like Abraham Noble's past, it stayed hidden for thirty years. When that day arrived, there was no need to wonder if transgressions of the past are ever dismissed.

This is quite simply a wonderfully written book and at the risk of sounding trite, I didn't want the story to end. It is rare to find such writing. There is a central tragedy that underpins the whole novel through which a collection of the most intriguing and sympathetic characters play their part. I know little of the area or history portrayed, but the gentle prose takes you back in time and paints such a vivid picture that you feel part of the story. I will not mention the central plot save to say that ever present, it never dominates the narrative but allows the reader to enjoy and experience more of the lives of the main characters in 1930s Virginia. The end to the story is delicately played but, and I cant fault the writer for this hence the five stars, it is just me being greedy, I never wanted it to end. I hope the author will return to this genre of writing. It is a treasure of a book and deserves to be a success.
I thought this was an excellent read. I am looking forward to reading other books written by this excellent author.
A great book about the Prohibition Era This story has it all (suspense,murder,and even romance) I, especially enjoyed reading about rural life in the mountains of Virginia. I look forward to enjoying more books from this new author!
I loved this book but some of the errors that could have been removed by a good editor caused this to get less than all stars.
